Sales job titles and what they actually do

Not every sales title means the same thing across companies. Here is how we define the roles we place, the responsibilities that come with them, and the skills that help you succeed.

SDR / BDR

Sales Development Representative or Business Development Representative. Responsible for outbound prospecting, cold outreach, qualifying leads and booking meetings for account executives. Strong skills: research, email/call discipline, curiosity and resilience.

Inside Sales Executive

Sells remotely over phone, video and email. Manages inbound leads, runs demos, negotiates and closes smaller deal sizes. Strong skills: product explanation, objection handling, pipeline discipline and follow-up rhythm.

Field Sales Executive

Meets prospects and customers in person, often covering a territory. Builds relationships, runs face-to-face demos and closes deals on the road. Strong skills: territory planning, relationship building, travel stamina and in-room persuasion.

Account Executive

Full-cycle seller who prospects, runs discovery, demos, negotiation and closes. Owns a quota and manages deals end-to-end. Strong skills: discovery questioning, value selling, negotiation, forecasting and time management.

Key Account Manager

Owns a portfolio of strategic accounts. Focuses on retention, expansion, cross-sell, upsell and long-term account growth. Strong skills: stakeholder mapping, account planning, contract negotiation and customer success thinking.

Business Development Manager

Identifies new markets, partnerships, channels and revenue opportunities. Often works on larger, longer-cycle deals and strategic alliances. Strong skills: market research, partner management, proposal writing and executive presence.

Sales Manager

Leads a team of frontline sellers. Responsible for hiring, coaching, forecasting, pipeline reviews and hitting team quota. Strong skills: coaching, sales process management, data-driven reviews and motivating teams.

Area / Regional Sales Manager

Manages sales across a city, state or region. Sets targets, monitors channel partners or field teams and ensures coverage. Strong skills: territory strategy, distributor management, regional forecasting and market expansion.

Sales Head / VP Sales / CRO

Builds the sales function, sets strategy, designs compensation, selects tools and owns the revenue number. Strong skills: sales system design, leadership, board communication, go-to-market strategy and scaling teams.
